FTP-Server Connection Setup

FTP tutorialConnecting and using FTP software with your remote server are the very foundation in the management of a website. FTP software is a very important and useful tool in maintaining and updating the security of your JOOMLA based website.


In this tutorial, you will be shown on how to:

1.    Connecting your FileZilla(FTP client) to your remote server

 


Downloading and Installing FileZilla Software
FileZilla is an open-source software which you can download for FREE at:

Filezilla | Download Filezilla Installer (approximate size: 3.81MB)

Please download and install ‘FileZilla_3.2.6.1_win32-setup.exe’ (if you are using other OS beside Windows, please download the appropriate version according to your computer requirement). FileZilla installation is quite a breeze because it doesn’t involved many setup processes compared to WAMPserver installation.


Connectiong Filezilla to your remote server

To connect FileZilla automatically, you are encourage to use the ‘Connection Wizard’ as outline in this tutorial later on.

After you start your FileZilla, go to File > Site Manager

A ‘Site Manager’ windows pop-up will appear. Click on the ‘New Site’ button.

First thing you should do is to insert/type in your website tag name. No need to worry about the availability of multiple buttons at the bottom left.

On ‘General’ tab, insert the following information as describe below.

Host
Normally, your host name should be in the format below:
ftp.domain name

Port
Leave empty

Server Type
On the drop-down function, choose  ‘FTP – File Transfer Protocol’

Logon Type

Choose ‘Normal’ type as this option will help you understand the following tutorial.

User
This is the username given to you by your web hosting service provider

Password
This is also the password given to you by your web hosting service provider

Next, select ‘Advance’ tab. On the ‘Default Local Directory’, click on ‘Browse’ button and choose the location of your default JOOMLA folder. Please refer to tutorial ‘Localhost Development’ for your reference.

After you’ve done with the above setting, click ‘OK’ button to proceed and the window box will close.

Now, go the the ‘Connect’ icon then click on the tag name of your website as you can see in the screenshot below.

Communication status between the remote server and your FileZilla software can be seen at the status board. ‘Directory Listing Successful’ shows that you have successfully connect your computer with the remote server.

There you go! You have successfully connect your FTP sofware to your remote server.
